Galveston wharves vision plan

IMPROVING PUBLIC ACCESS TO A WORKING WATERFRONT.

In collaboration with The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation and Port of Galveston, Stoss developed a Vision Plan for Galveston Wharves that takes into consideration public waterfront access, future tourism, and port activity development plans. The 318-acre study area, operated by the Port but owned by a combination of public and private entities, is a vital economic engine whose parts are disconnected and which generally lacks opportunities for the public to visit and experience what is otherwise a vibrant and authentic working waterfront.

Major recommendations contained in the visioning plan include:

  • Creating green connectors that provide multi-modal access to the waterfront and the core Historic District

  • Developing a priority plan for expanded open space development in and around the wharves that build off the connectors, establish expanded waterfront destinations, and offer new sites for integrated development and tourism.

  • Connecting segmented waterfront promenades into a continuous welcoming accessible waterfront experience.

  • Protecting and enhancing existing historic and cultural sites including spaces that celebrate maritime history and port heritage.

  • Organizing sites and roadways that allow for port activity expansion and function while layering in safe and coordinated public access.
